Zillertal

Zillertal

Zillertal is the biggest austrian crag, but it’s also in the biggest ones in Europe. The area is a valley in Tyrol, with a lot of climbing spots, sectors. Besides the lead sectors, this is the biggest bouldering area also in the country. The valley is one of the most beautiful ones and offers a lot of activities for those who are in love with outdoor sports: skiing, hiking, bunches of klettersteigs, mountain biking, etc.

Zillertal Bouldering

At this moment you can find the Zillertal boulder sectors in the Topoguru app, but the lead sectors are also going to be available in a while. Zillertal is a real summer boulder crag, as it is a perfect skiing area at winter time.We can say the same things about Silvretta also. You can find a lot of sectors both with granite and gneiss boulders. Most of the sectors are reachable within a 15 minute walk, some of them are also fit for the families with small children. In the valley, the boulder sectors are located around Mayrhofen, within a 20 minute drive.

Areas

The biggest boulder climbing sector in Zillertal is Zillergrund, where you can find more than 150 boulder rocks on a hillside. The area is pretty big, so the Topoguru app built-in compass tool can be very useful, especially if it’s your first visit here. Another recommended sector is Ginzling Wald, which is located next to Ginzling village, just a few minutes walk from the parking area. Here you can climb even at sunny weather, because the sector is in a shady, wooded hillside. Besides this we also recommend Zemmschlucht sector, which is in the rivedbed. Ideal summer climbing spot with rounded shapes and sometimes fresh water to cool down yourself.

Rest Day

In the summer there are numerous outdoor possibilities in Zillertal. Some of the cable cars are open, so you can have a nice trek up in the mountains or hire and bring up a bicycle and then wheel down on the serpentines crossing the ski slopes. There are swimming pools and an adventure thermal bath, if you look for a relaxing day. For some vertical experiences, you can find a lot of klettersteigs between difficulty A-E. Hiring special equipment is free in the tourist information offices. In case of rainy days indoor climbing is possible in Kletterzentrum Zillertal or in the Kletterzentrum Innsbruck, which was opened in 2017 and it is one of the biggest climbing gyms in Europe. Innsbruck is one hour with car from Mayrhofen. You can also visit Silvretta, which is a beautiful summer bouldering area on 2000 meters above sea level (and a perfect skiing spot at wintertime).

Where to stay

The campsite in Mayrhofen can be a good choice for longer stay, as it’s well equipped with excellent facilities: shop, bar, restaurant, drying room, tennis court, swimming pool and perfect facilities. Besides this, there are a lot of hotels, appartment houses and private accommodations all along the valley, Airbnb and interchalet.com are the most common websites in this region.
